ALC offers services through its Independent Living Services (ILS) and Supported Living Services (SLS) programs. Our organization is dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges to achieve and maintain self-sufficient living arrangements in their homes and within communities of their choice.
We focus on equipping adults with the essential functional skills required for independent living. Through targeted training, community-based services, and supportive programming, we facilitate the development of skills necessary for individuals to secure and sustain a fulfilling living situation.
ALC’s ILS/SLS programs work cooperatively with the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and Regional Centers to ensure that its services and supports adhere to the principles stated in the Lanterman Act, Welfare and Institutions Code, Section 4689:

ABOUT THE FOUNDER
The Founder, has dedicated her extensive professional career to advocating for and serving individuals with developmental and intellectual challenges. She holds a bachelor’s degree in primary education, a minor in physical
education, and a master's degree in staff development. In addition, she has pursued over 60 post-master’s credits in psychology and human behavior, which have equipped her with a deep understanding of the complexities of human development and learning processes. Over her 23 years of experience as a special education teacher, she recognized the need to further her expertise in assisting academically challenged students, with the goal of enhancing the overall quality of life for disadvantaged adults
living with developmental disabilities.

The Alternative Learning Center (ALC) was founded in 1986 with a mission to provide comprehensive transitional services tailored to mothers with intellectual challenges and their children. The center aims to foster empowerment and independence within this vulnerable population. Building on the positive outcomes of its inaugural residential programs, ALC expanded its offerings by developing community-based Independent Living Services (ILS) and Supported Living Services Programs (SLS). These initiatives are specifically designed to equip participants with disabilities with essential skills for self-sufficiency, enabling them to live independently and integrate more fully into their communities. Through these programs, ALC strives to create an environment that promotes dignity and enhances the life satisfaction of individuals with disabilities and their families.
